Too bad it’s the Democrats who shrugged as SAT scores plummeted, kids deprived of their normal social development opportunities had mental health crises, and kids returned to school in buildings that were falling apart. I hear the facilities at Gatehouse are really nice, though.
Lies, lies, and more lies. Sad that you can't make a point without lying.
You don’t have kids in FCPS. Do you?
I have a kid in HS in FCPS. And I see SEL efforts and budget constraints, no shrugging.
I have children in FCPS and I see too much SEL in the school day at the expense of core subjects. I also see resources (funds, time, and people) redirected towards more SEL like programs and SEER money further funding Panorama and other CRT consultants, while teacher retention is at its lowest. I know of multiple families who are outsourcing tutors for math and English lessons for all grades because they have observed the emotional and behavioral toll it has taken on their kids who have fallen behind academically. Other families are spending a fortune for SAT preparation because the on-line tutoring service offered by the school is ineffective for most. I also watch the School Board meetings and can attest to their priorities and attitude. I even have to hear them, time and again, congratulate themselves for a “job well done”, and, of course, there are the celebrations and photo sessions. I also watch some brave community members comment and some activists put on a show. By the time they get to the relevant topics of the meeting, most of the times, I have fallen asleep, just to find out later I hadn’t miss much.
I’m going to assume your comments are honest. I am also a parent of kids in FCPS and I don’t know what this means. Can you describe how they have SEL in the school day at the expense of academics? I know they do a screener once or twice a year. But what else?
Opting out of the screener doesn’t exempt students from SEL content and principles because it is embedded in every single aspect of their experience at school, from the content on core subjects, on required electives, on assemblies, and to activities - including the facilities they use. If you want to get to the minutia of it, ask your children what happens at school: what they do; what they learn (and how); what surveys they are asked to take (with identity questions); etc. To give you an example, recently my child’s HS had a visitor deliver a self-empowering message to the school. I learned that some students chose to study at the library instead, while others attended the event, but couldn’t learn much because of the noise caused by those who chose to be disrespectful to the guest. Soon they’ll have the suicide prevention screener and activities, and now are adding lessons on gun safety. All of this while students are struggling to prepare themselves for the SAT tests and college applications. Because I assume your further inquiry to my original comment is honest, I will share this video with you. It is worth watching with your high school child to initiate (or enhance) a conversation about his/her school experience. This will provide you with particular answers to your question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hybqg81n-M
