McLean was in control the entire game…offense looked a tad sloppy but defense was great and Langley was never a threat. McLean needs to tighten things up before Tuesday night though if they want any chance for an upset against Yorktown.
After Langley scored the first goal, it was McLean's offense that scored 4 first-quarter goals to set the tone of the game. After McLean scored a couple of more goals to extend its lead to 6-1, Langley scored 2 unanswered goals to close the lead to 6-3 in the third quarter. While McLean's defense has improved significantly since the beginning of the season when it gave up 20 goals to Chantilly, Langley's offense, particularly its midfielders, had multiple good looks, but wasn't able to convert because of the athletic play of McLean's goalie. It wasn't until McLean's right attack (who McLean moved to right midfield coming out of the box for much of the game in order to try to match him up on a short-stick defender) scored his third goal and extended McLean's lead to 7-3 that McLean was able to end Langley's run and effectively secure the game. Looking ahead to Tuesday, it's no secret that McLean will have its hands full with Yorktown. Yorktown is a well-coached, quality team. While McLean held its own in its set offense and defense when it lost to Yorktown 10-6 in the rain a couple of weeks ago, it was no match for Yorktown in transition when it had difficulty clearing the ball and Yorktown scored most of its goals. If McLean is going to have any chance of closing the gap, much less beating Yorktown, it will need to clean up its transition issues and play its best game of the season.
