Clearly there is a very dark strain of misogyny that runs through the GOP. Child rape and sexual molestation and incest are not new. It’s something that even the self-hating women in the movement are okay with, for some of them because it happened to them and they had to lock up that part of their brain and soul to get through. But for those who are experiencing a crack of humanity in their armor of misogyny, remember what a ten year old is.
It’s impossible to take in the full gravity of this story without thinking carefully about how young a 10-year-old is. Ten-year-olds are of an age when Dr. Benjamin Spock said children are finally prepared “to cross a heavily traveled street without adult supervision.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s childhood development guidelines for children this age emphasize that they are still learning to build deep friendships and understand concepts such as responsibility. They are usually in fourth or fifth grade, depending on when their birthdays fall, and they are being assessed on concepts such as reading comprehension and fractions. They’re at the right age for Pixar movies, but not for Marvel action extravaganzas; they can handle Amelia Bedelia and Willy Wonka and maybe the later Harry Potter books. Gift guides for 10-year-olds recommend STEM learning toys and plush comfort animals. Ames’s research suggested that 10-year-olds are still learning to tell jokes; that they’re prone to losing or frittering away money; that they think dating is something for the future.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/07/13/ohio-10-year-old-rape-abortion-childhood/ If you are one of the Democrats who reliably votes Democratic but has always felt that forced birthers really cared about life, you can stop doing that. If you’re a forced birther who voted your forced birther politics with your misogyny a background issue and believed that life was so important, what about the life of the actually living? It’s time to sit with your internalized misogyny. This is an especially heinous example, but think of the misery your forcing your beliefs on women will cause.
My dd is 16, but thinking about her at that age, just, damn. This made me tear up. She literally just texted me asking if I’d order a pillow pet that’s on sale. At 10, she had a bed full of stuffed animals, still pretended to believe in Santa, totally rocked fractions but had trouble remembering where to put the decimal when multiplying, and would still reach for my hand when we crossed the street if her friends weren’t around. She was engrossed in the Warriors cats book series (I remember her crying when one of the cats died), and had stopped reading The Hunger Games series because she didn’t like the violence. There’s no reality, no circumstance, no way of thinking that makes it ok to require her to try to carry a pregnancy to term, deliver a baby, and deal with postpartum care, on top of the trauma of rape. Thinking about her losing her privacy in the process and having to further protect her from conservative a-holes who don’t believe her or think we forced her to commit murder instead of helping her heal, it’s beyond infuriating. It’s like salt in the wound knowing that this isn’t exactly uncommon, and that the frequency goes up among children with special needs.
I have a 10 year old daughter. She loves to read Babysitter Club books and won’t go near something like the Hunger Games because the premise scares her. Her favorite stuffed animal varies, but right now it’s a stuffed dog she named Coco. She recently put away her Barbies but still likes playing with her toy vet set. She’s excited to be a safety patrol at her elementary school next year. The idea of her being raped is too awful to fathom on its own, but the idea of her little 70-pound body then having to carry a pregnancy to term and go through labor and delivery is horrifying. How can people be okay subjecting young children to that level of trauma?
They are sick. They will not give up control over women’s bodies no matter the cost.
