I was going to say that I think he's kind of a sociopath, but I actually think he operates by a totally different code than most people. Number one is saving his skin. Number two is seeing his economic theories realized. Third is sticking it to the parts of Gilead that don't affect his economic theories and that he doesn't like.

His interaction with Lydia fits into box three IMO. I think he knows that Lydia won't be able to harm or torture Janine. Maybe a little of box one. Seems like he's the commander now in charge of the Handmaid program, so he needs Lydia to get it/keep it together.[/quote]

This mostly. He gets the best, funniest lines. He is mercurial. We can't pin down who he is because he is the baddest MF of them all, just not the most powerful of them all.[/quote]
