They HAVE picked a lane. Whatever Meghan does or doesn’t do is wrong, and they’ll twist themselves into knots with whatever arguments they come up with, all the while asserting how non-racist they are in their often bizarre judgements.

If Meghan had gone, she would have been seen by the harpy’s as pushing herself into the family when she wasn’t wanted, angling for publicity at  the most inappropriate of times, and risking her pregnancy following a miscarriage with a 10+ hour flight during a pandemic.

My guess is that she had a positive, though distant relationship with Philip, she is supporting her husband in ways that work for both of them, and she is avoiding the risk that her presence will be a distraction in a volatile situation— when Harry has things he needs to address with William and Charles.
