My oldest son took Hon Algebra 1 in 6th. Breezed through it .In 9th he barely made a C in Hon Precalculus. The issue with these accelerations in middle schools is with all the test retakes, it’s impossible to assess if your child is doing well or not. Once they get to high school is where the gaps emerge. We slowed down my current middle schooler and he will take Algebra 1 in 8th which is appropriate for him.
There is no honors algebra 1. And algebra 1 in 6th is hyper acceleration. Those on the fastest track normally take it in 7th. But I agree even them too many kids have been accelerated. That doesn’t mean compacted math should go away. There are lots of kids who do well with it and would be bored in an all-levels class. There is no way the kids who are advanced will accelerate — they teacher won’t be able to teach multiple content areas at once.
