Some recent decisions continue to raise concerns that haven’t been addressed publicly. Greg’s move to bring in Tom’s club and allow all players into Travel without cuts. It appears to be driven more by financial opportunity than player development. Expanding Travel rosters increases revenue but dilutes competitiveness and affects the experience for those seeking higher-level play. At the same time, the core issue of field space remains unresolved. Growing the club without solving that fundamental problem creates a downhill slope, one that may look positive on a financial report, but comes at the cost of retaining quality players and delivering quality services. These decisions impact the entire community and deserve more serious reflection.
As a proud DC resident whose kid plays for a MLS Next team outside of the city, GA is not going to listen. I have a colleague who speaks to him regularly and says he is extremely confident in the program’s direction and he is not really open to outside solutions (ie arrogant). We started in DC Soccer rec and their team completely bungled everything to let my kid out the door. If DC Soccer would get their stuff together I am very confident that if the boys in my son’s age group were not being exported to MD and VA, they could have the best squad in the area. That is how much talent is in the District but they are spread out among 3-5 teams. Field space is a more complex issue. First, you must research the new non-turf options which GA and DC Soccer actually have per my source. Second, you will need to obtain sponsors to renovate a field like Hearst or Ft. Steven’s into turf with lights. Hearst has been redone again with grass which looks good now but will not be maintained by the District and you can’t have the activity level there as you can with turf. Third, you must also be willing to practice all over the city because there are fields available. You may have to rent temporary lighting like many Virginia programs have at field without permanent lights. This can be used to mitigate the lack of lighting at many fields and make them useable. Finally, you don’t need a lot of space to get a quality session in. It just needs to be flat. Be creative and simply focus on obtaining quality coaching. As a DC resident and soccer lover, I really hope DC Soccer or another entity gets things together for soccer families living in the District.
