Clearly the No Kings protests struck a nerve. They sent a message and it appears it was received.
I get the purpose behind the protests...but honestly...aside from making you feel better, what did it really solve? Sure, it proved that you did what you have the right to do...protest. But the protests are over and tomorrow it's back to work. Back to school.
It reminded Trump and his sycophants that many many Americans are paying attention and are angry. This is a democracy so it matters what the people think.
Np here. I hate being so cynical, but we no longer live in a country where it matters what the people think. In normal times, leaders would see massive protests and offer some semblance of compromise or reassurance. If for no other reason, fear of not being re-elected. But the gop somehow does not seem concerned about future elections. The protests were great, but we need to follow that up with lasting changes. Get off of meta, X, Amazon. Don’t give money to red states, etc. Protesters need to be persistent. We need to fill McPherson Square with 500 protesters at all times, for starters. The press needs to stop giving them the coverage/attention they want and call them out on every lie, every time. The protests are a good start, but it should be a catalyst for resistance - not a one and done.
There were 5 million Americans at 6 protest this weekend, 2% of the population. And almost double the protest numbers of May. If our government refuses to listen, imagine what the July protests will look like. Or August.
THEY DO NOT CARE. Why don't you people get this?
Because I'm not a nihilist. Yes, they see. They are not blind. And they really really care.
Then we fundamentally disagree. On my end, it looks like y'all had fun, but it didn’t move the people with actual power one millimeter. Nothing changed because effective protest requires certain ingredients that this kind of protest very specifically and intentionally does not have. If they actually threatened power in any way, they would not be allowed to happen.
We're building something here. All the pieces matter. This is a great example, from an article about the weekend: "One young man I spoke to, the child of undocumented immigrants, teared up when he talked about the fear in his home—his parents afraid to go to work, neighbors afraid to go to the grocery store, everyone afraid of being literally dragged away. He too wore an American flag like a cape. “Mostly I’m afraid to think about the future,” he told me. “But being here? I feel a little better. I know I’m not alone.” It's not about just this weekends protests. It's about what's next, what builds, etc.
Alright. Let's chat in 6 months when you all are still doing nothing more than meeting up to look at each other's signs and go home. Heck, we can chat in 3 years when Trump has disappeared countless more people, stochastic terrorism is an everyday occurrence, and the Supreme Court has named him God King forever and evermore, and y'all are still building to something with your damn signs.
He's not as all-powerful as you're portraying him. He's backed off on a number of things, the courts are slowing his agenda down, and he's beginning to tank in the polls. He will sink under the weight of his own ineptitude.
That's easy to say when what he IS doing isn't directly affecting you. For a lot of other people, these past few months have been filled with terror and devastation.
