The last time this country had a newly elected POTUS who was of legitimate presidential caliber was when Obama was elected in 2008. Obama had yet to become well known nationally in 2005 and very few had him on their short list of potential 2008 nominees in 2005. March 2005 polling in the link below for reference. Clinton was a known name in political circles by 1989 but he wouldn't have topped any 1992 Dem nominee polling data in 1989.
