I think it's partially because DCUM doesn't skew as crunchy as it used to. Not that crunchy people can't be a-holes, but there are a lot more "traditional" people here than there used to be. Just look at the way people discuss sex, dating, fashion, discipline, etc. The DC area is relatively liberal, but it isn't all that culturally progressive.

I often come across posts that seem like they were written by the great-aunt who shares "remember when kids said sir and ma'am? remember when men were men and women were women?" posts on FB.

My take? People were pissed and angry under a stressful imbecile for president and rhey lashed out here because of all of the overt discrimination and unspoken hostility we saw all around us.
