Kids need to learn, there is a right way to do things, and a wrong way. If they want to organize a peaceful, lawful, protest on their own time and it doesn't interfere with homework or other responsibilities, then they can go ahead. Leaving school during the day, when they are supposed to be in class is the wrong way. Yes, they need to learn the lesson, and explain why they are being grounded. Protesting is a right, free speech is a right, but with it comes responsibility. I would ground them.
Protesting on a weekend is easy. But walking out of school sends a message: I care enough about this issue, that I am willing to take this personal risk to make a statement. A kid who participates knowing their parent will ground them is making an even bigger statement. You have fueled the cause. Good for you!
