There is nothing wrong with her being a Republican but it's more about her dishonesty in owning her beliefs. Lying and pandering to the crowd to win school board (which luckily has no influence in DC) is unfortunate and demeaning. Considering the toxic, crooked political landscape of DC we need leaders who actually honor their role as public servants. Ashley clearly has no familiarity about education especially DC education. Her platform clearly identifies her lack of knowledge on education policy. It is clear she ran for herself and to use the position as a stepping stone. Ashley claims she is not a Trump supporter but I believe it's because she views him as being too progressive (she definitely isn't a HRC supporter). She works for the Independent Women Forum (http://www.iwf.org/about) which is ultra conservative and anti- woman (read between the lines on their site) who Trump's campaign manager Kellyanne Conway sits on the board of. Ashley claims she spoke at both the Democratic and Republican conventions which is not true as well. We have enough liars who exploit children of color and poor children in DC. It's on us to stay informed, vote with knowledge, and take action to hold public leaders accountable. Election Results (http://wtop.com/dc/2016/11/dc-2016-general-election-results/) New school board members: Ashley Carter (at-large), Markus Batchelor (Ward 8), Lanette Woodruff (Ward 4) Markus Batchelor - Age 23, graduated from Thurgood Marshall Charter School, DC native, lives, eats, breathes political life since high school, dropped out of American University to pursue DC politics, strongly supported by new Ward 8 council member Trayon White and friends, very active campaign Lanette Woodruff (uncontested) - part of green team, Democrats for Education Reform candidate, husband is Darren Woodruff who's on the DC Public Charter School Board, has children that attended DCPS and charter schools, Howard alum, made no effort on campaign besides one party thrown by brandon todd Overall, school board no longer has any power or influence and Bowser does whatever she wants. It's PART-TIME with a stipend. People typically use the role as a stepping stone to council member or for experience to run out of state when they leave.
Bolded used to be true when the BOE had real power. Not true anymore- I can't remember any of the recent councilmembers who have been on the BOE beforehand.
