I didn't leave the Republican Party. The Republican Party left me.
This is exactly how my spouse feels. He's been a Republican his whole life and has been frustrated with the party since 2000, but at this point can't take it anymore. The Tea Partiers and evangelicals and the Koch Brothers have hijacked what used to be his party - he is fiscally conservative and for a strong national defense, but could not care less about social issues. His ideology is essentially "live and let live". At this point, he feels he has no party. To the OP's question - he's decided to vote a straight D ticket. He hopes that the Republicans lose both the White House and the Senate (he was also hoping the for House, but that's unlikely to happen) because he wants the GOP to get the message that the majority of voters don't want what they are selling. I personally find it pretty sad. I'm a moderate D - always have been - and I have disagreed with many planks of the GOP platform for a long time. However, I think as a country we are better served by a political system that has at least two viable political parties that can work together and find solutions to the many problems we're facing. It's a dark time in American politics.
