Maybe since "reality tv" became an occupation.

However, there have been plenty of film/TV celebrities that are actually good looking.

Merle Oberon was half Indian.  She asked a painter of her mother's portrait to lighten her skin.  She also was in a bad car accident and lighting techniques were used to hide scars:

Josephine Baker, the famous dancer also did covert operations during WWII.  She suffered numerous physical injuries as a result.  After the war, she adopted a dozen kids in her 40s and 50s.  She still looked awesome to her dying day.  (No botox required.)
