I will blame the crappy educational system which encourages the dumbing down of most of our country. Educated people will not vote for Trump for the most part. The rest of the world cannot believe Americans are this stupid but this is our reality.
Polls do not seem to bear this out, though. I agree with your sentiment, as I am truly perplexed by support for Trump. The person I thought would be most likely to be pro-Trump, my FIL, thinks he's a complete loon and frightening for our country. I have never felt so alienated and out-of-touch from a large bloc of Americans as I currently feel...I know a pretty politically diverse set of people, and I don't know a single Trump supporter. Or at least not one that admits it. And, like I said, the people I would most have expected to support Trump hate him, so my basic understanding of who his supporters might be seems to be off as well. Almost any other area of policy or politics where I have a firm conviction, I can at least see and intellectually understand the other side (part of growing up in a very conservative household but turning out to be quite liberal, I guess). I have no understanding of why people support Trump, but they obviously do. And there are enough people who do that it can't be that they are all stupid or uneducated or unapologetic bigots or whatever names you want to call them. I wish there were some polite way of asking this question in real life, but obviously there isn't.
Actually, I think the polls show that Trump does not do well with the college educated. His biggest block is the uneducated male - he is winning this group by some ridiculous margin (way outpacing Romney). By attacking women and minorities, I guess he is thinking this block will be enough to win but seems like a losing strategy to me. I also don't know any Trump supporters - at least during the Republican primary. I would guess some of my Republican friends will hold their nose and vote for him now although many of them are strongly considering sitting out the election or voting third party. Many of my most conservative friends were actively working against him in the primary although to no avail.
