NP: If one resides north of 66, they are residing closer to Marshall Road/Thoreau or Oakton ES/Thoreau. If one resides south of 66, they are residing closer to Mosby Woods/Luther Jackson. If attending the closest neighborhood school is the idea - was mentioned above - then boundaries must shift. I am not sure how playing a numbers game is relevant. There are neighborhoods closer to Luther Jackson as compared to the current outlier schools. Perhaps moving those schools-since proximity was noted- would be the right thing to do.
Other things being equal, it would be good to maximize the ability of students to walk to their assigned schools and to assign students to the schools closest to their homes. However, it simply is not feasible to do this for all students, given where the schools have been built. And, if it were to happen, Oakton HS would be more affected than most schools, as most of the students who currently go there live closer to other schools, particularly Chantilly, South Lakes, and Madison. If FCPS has tools at its disposal eventually that would enable it to map out what a county-wide redistricting would look like, assigning priority in the algorithm to minimizing the distance to schools for as many students as possible without overcrowding the schools, it would be interesting to see the results. Some people would like it, and many others would be unhappy.
