Thanks everyone. So the plan is to apply to: 2 MD state schools (UMCP plus one other) 3 out of state public schools, one a reach like UNC and a couple of easier reaches like U of South Carolina and Colorado 3 privates, 1 a reach and 2 second-tier SLACs/privates. Does this appear to be a reasonable mix and number of applications to ensure admission in 2 - 3 choices and a possiblity of merit aid in at least one? Does this sound like enough? As mentioned before, merit aid would be great but we can make it happen without it.
My guess OP. UMCP - 50/50 chance but no merit (SAT is in mid 50% range but GPA is too low for UMCP. Incoming class wGPA was 4.22 using MCPS system) UNC - far reach USC - yes, maybe some merit Colorado - yes, maybe some merit
OP's son is in a magnet and has virtually identical stats to what my MCPS magnet child has. Mine was accepted to UMCP and tells me that he doesn't know anyone in the magnet who was rejected. I think OP's child has a better than 50/50 chance at UMDCP.
