We are no longer in the DC area, but our first dog came from a rescue group that fosters and transports dogs all over the country (Freedom Street Rescue, located in Houston but they have fosters in different states). My second dog was rescued from a shelter in New Mexico, and was being fostered at a local board and train place not far from where we live in Colorado.

I'm sure there's similar rescue groups in the DC area, but I don't have any personal experience with them. [/quote]
