I'd like to know how Becky Smerdon isn't more "on the radar" for FCC School Board. I know she's a FACTS candidate, but let's face it, her experience in education is beyond what any other candidate possesses. A PHD in education and 20 years working analyzing data in school systems nationwide. Erin Gill will be another Justin Castillo, rubber stamp as FC Post said, but there is no doubt she's personable. How could you be offended by supporting the girls? City leaders stood up for a man who sexually abused them while they sat in court brave and alone. Why wasn't Phil Duncan on their side? It is mind-boggling.
Because despite the PhD she made an incredibly poor judgment call aligning herself with the FACTS group early on as a newcomer. She lost credibility by association in addition to initiating legal action against the schools.
On the first point, whether you like the people Smerdon "associates" with, that is a matter of opinion, .mostly, so I wont speak to that. On the second point, that she initiated legal action "against the schools" particularly for an unworthy cause is complete and utter nonsense. Smerdon et al were under "civilized" attack from people in positions of authority in the school system (not "the schools," as you put it). It is my understanding that someone's didn't like that the Secial Ed community committee was actually being run by community members, and not operating under the thumb of the school system leadership. Oh, they tried to get Smerdon et al to cow tow to their will, saying certain procedures permitted and even demanded school system authority figures to shape and direct the agendas of the meeting. After requesting a review of articulated written procedures and getting nothing but diversionary non responses from school system leadership, Smerdon et al had no choice but to turn to the courts for a neutral third party interpretation of who was in charge of the committee and what role everyone could play. So, you see, what Smerdon et al did, that is, petitioning the court for interpretation, is exactly what a responsible, civic minded group of people should and must do when confronted by opposition. It is not bullying. It is not mishandling. It is not nasty or underhanded. It is forthright, transparent, and above board. If you care about community input in school systems, and if you care about it especially for one of the historically least well served groups of students, then you would applaud the steps they took. It is unambiguously good.
