I do it because my daughter has natural hair that she gets straightened. The slightest drop of rain will turn it to a frizzy afro.
How can a child have hair that can never even get a drop of rain on it? Sounds extremely ridiculous.
Seriously. The kid doesn't go outside at all if it's so much as drizzling because it will mess up her hair ?! Way to encourage vanity & raise a prima donna, mom! Just buy her a hat to wear outside if it's that important to her. Or better yet, have her save up to buy it herself -- she might re-evaluate her priorities if you stop catering to this ridiculousness!
Obviously you all are not AA. Most AA women/girls who have natural hair that gets straightened will not go out in the rain if they can help it. And drizzle can be even worse. Has nothing to do with being a prima donna or vanity, it has to do with what water does to our natural hair that has been straighteded (meaning no chemical relaxer). Lol, haven't you all wondered why most AA women don't swim or work out on a regular basis? She does wear a hat but if it's warm that doesn't help. Will make our hair puff up. Umbrellas also can be problematic. We just don't do rain or high humidity. So I'm picking her up in the rain.
I'm AA & think keeping a child of any race away from a small amount of water like she's the freaking Wicked Witch of the West in order to protect her hairstyle is absurd. And since when do black women not work out? Pilates classes & treadmills might not be as popular with us as they are with the white ladies but have you ever seen an elite female basketball team without an AA on it? Do we not sweat when we play basketball? What about when we sprint? Do you think FloJo was worried about messing up her hair when she was training for the Olympics?
Look folks calm the F down. And to the AA poster above, stop siding with folks who obviously don't know anything about AA hair. The "she's the freaking Wicked Witch of the West" comment was completely uncalled for in regards to a child and I'm offended that you would even say that when I know you know the deal. If you are actually an AA woman, YOU know exactly why this is an issue for natural hair that gets straightened without chemicals. What I'm saying is that when my DD gets her very long hair professionally straightened/pressed, she's not getting it wet. She's not walking in the rain, not dancing in the rain, not running in the rain, not singing in the rain, if she (and me) want to maintain it being straight. It's not getting wet in the shower, the bath or the pool. She does not have a relaxer. If her hair was permed it would be a different scenario. Most AA girls that play sports, do not get their hair pressed out on a regular basis UNLESS they have it relaxed/permed. AA girls that are regular swimmers, would not get their natural hair pressed out regularly or wear it straight UNLESS it's relaxed/permed. They would either wear their hair in a kinky/natural style or have it permed. The same goes for adult AA women who work out regularly or play sports that leads to lots of sweating. Most would wear their hair in a natural kinky state/style or have it permed. And also AA PP, if you know anything about Flojo, you would know that she either wore her hair in its' natural state (which was curly) or it was relaxed and blown out straight. She did not PRESS her out-and I know you know the difference. And if you don't, you are clearly not AA. I stand firm on that. Lisa Leslie's straight hair is relaxed. Gabby Douglass' hair is relaxed. Simone Biles' hair is relaxed. Mo'ne Davis' hair is relaxed and she wears weave protective styles. MY DD gets her hair pressed out, hair is not relaxed. There is a difference. Currently my DD does play Lacrosse, however, if it's raining and when it was hot (like two weeks ago) there are specific things that need to be done in order to maintain the straight style -pulled up in a very tight ponytail with a headband around the edges to keep it from frizzing and TWO rain hats, if raining. But if she has forgotten said rain hats, I'm off to the school to deliver. DH knows the deal too. He has delivered a rain hat on many a surprise rainy day lacrosse practice. Most AA women who play sports and work out would do exactly the same thing if they are trying to maintain a straight style. But no matter what, if I can help it, I'm not having her walk in the rain because I don't want her to and I can manage the pickup. And that's that on that. Here's some interesting websites on the subject in case any of you are so inclined to learn something instead of chastise-especially the AA pp. Some are funny, some are the straight up truth.
