Is it more concerning if a DD weighs at the 99 percentile vs. a DS? Given society's emphasis on women being thin and all...
Weight percentile alone tells you nothing; you need to know the child's height as well. And from a health perspective, I wouldn't worry more or less based on sex if a child were over- or under-weight. I would expect the emotional issues once the child reached a certain age might be different. But I wouldn't worry, per se; I would just plan to equip them with self-confidence in whatever way(s) I can.
+1 and be particularly vigilant about protecting the child from people like OP's MIL who are so quick to label a child overweight. My DD is over 90%ile in height and weight. Her pediatrician says she's just fine and has been tracking closely on the same growth curve since she was a baby. She's always been much more solid or denser than other babies/kids. Now that she's getting to the tween years it's really important to me that we reinforce the idea that bodies come in all sizes and she'll grow into the body she is meant to have as long as she eats well and stays active. At her check-ups the dr. reinforces the same message and explained to her that people can vary a lot in size/density of their frame and be heavier or lighter due to that along with varying amount of muscle. So far she doesn't seem to be uncomfortable about her weight and loves being tall and strong (she's very athletic).
