Somewhere along the way we have abandoned a rigorous focus on reading writing arithmetic to cater to the feelings of certain demographics.
Yes we have, and good. There is a lot more to education than reading, writing, and arithmetic. (Or even reading, writing, and math in general.)
Teach a child to read write and understand the basic building blocks of math and they have the skill to teach themselves almost anything as they go thru life. That was the point of public education. That's why pub ed exists so all kids get these life skills, not just the children of elites. Public Ed is one of the great accomplishments of western civilization. And you are willing to throw it all away so what, a kid knows how to put a condom on a banana??
Am I willing to throw away one of the great accomplishments of western civilization so that a kind knows how to put a condom on a banana? How elegantly you phrase that. As it happens, I think that there is more to public education than reading, writing, and understanding the basic building blocks of math -- including providing an education about sexuality and reproduction. When it comes to skills that may save your life, knowing how to put on a condom is way up there.
Some feel that knowing how to properly handle and respect a firearm is a skill that may save your life. Do you think that MCPS should be teaching children those skills as well. My guess is that if the NRA's Eddie Eagle spoke at your kid's school, you'd be outraged and asking "Why are we getting away from reading, writing, and arithmetic?"
