If your child is in 1st grade, you should let him/her read to you and talk about what he/she is reading. I think it's important to let your child choose what he/she likes. You can help him/her pronounce words and enjoy the book. Enjoyment is key to keeping reading going. Don't worry if your child is not a perfect reader or is late to reading (it will happen).
