I will be blunt.  Here are some scenarios:

1.  Maybe the coach believes your son lied about sending a text "to the wrong number."  Maybe your child did lie about this.
2.  Maybe the coach believes that a text of a few lines is not a responsible reaction to oversleeping and missing practice.  Maybe the coach thinks your child could have emailed, or tried to set up a time to apologize and explain afterwards. 
3.  Maybe your kid sulked when he got moved out of the first boat and the coaching staff believes that he doesn't have the attitude for a team sport like crew.
4.  Maybe your kid isn't that great and this was the tipping point in moving him out of the first boat.
5.  Maybe absenteeism from practice was on the rise and your son was the unfortunately snoozing straw that broke the camel's back.

And maybe it's exactly as you described it.  But most likely your version is missing something -- it's hard to be objective about your own kid, and that's understandable, and after all you aren't the one in the boat so you don't actually know how your child interacts at all times.[/quote]
