Anonymous wrote: And this is fucking student government at a California university. Who the fuck cares what her views on Israel are? Not only are these students anti-Semites and anti-American, they apparently suffer from delusions of grandeur. Are they anticipating the council will be somehow involved in peace negotiations in the Middle East? GMAFB. I don't care how "contentious" the divestiture issue is/was. OUTRAGEOUS. I didn't hear anything about "Israel," although I readily admit I could have missed something. It was centered on her being Jewish which takes it into a whole new area of hate. One imagines that this grew out of the BDS debate, though. Thank goodness for the adult in the room.
It's about Israel. Just read the first article. They include Israel as a source of the problem. There is a disinvest in Israel movement that is making its way through the college ranks- based on the model used with South Africa. The opposition by the pro Israel groups has been vicious. Name calling etc typical right wing response. Not agruing the merits, just attacking the people proposing the program. For many of the college kids it is the first time they have faced this. It is an eye opener and they remember who said what and what organization they represented. It has really been divisive.
It was, plain and simple, questioning someone's impartiality based on her Jewish faith. We have no way of knowing what was going on in soneone's mind. The process played out and the pushback prevailed against what was a very ugly episode. Apparently, the student government voted to put the video back up. So score one for transparency and making this a teachable moment.
