I try not to judge other people's parenting decisions as long as they aren't harmful. But I kind of think breastfeeding older children IS harmful. I breastfed all five of mine exclusively. Like most kids, somewhere between about 12 and 14 months they started becoming more independent. They were drinking from a cup and eating pretty much everything we did. Had I continued to nurse them it would have been 100% of about MY needs and not about theirs. They were getting most of their nutrition from the foods they were eating. Milk was no longer even necessary. Seeing a three (or even an older two) year old with a bottle grosses me out. To me it isn't about the breast as much as it is this need to treat a toddler like an infant.
A significant amount of brain development happens in the first three years of life. Giving your child as much nutrition as possible is not at all selfish. Perhaps it is selfish of you to put your needs and comfort above the nutritional benefits of your child. Do what best suits your family, but don't judge others when you clearly have a lack of knowledge on the subject.
