Since your friend is a Catholic, perhaps he would like to know what the Bible says about talking to dead spirits:

Deuteronomy 18:10-12: "There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD; and because of these detestable things the LORD your God will drive them out before you."

The Bible is clear that departed souls do not return to talk with us, and that anything that purports to be a spirit of the dead is a demon in disguise. I would really hope you would re-evaluate your "hope" to have your dead relatives visit you.

Does God protect His children? Indeed He does. Does He use guardian angels to do so? Perhaps. But we are to keep our minds and hopes on Christ and not go seeking after angels.
