Ruth Wilson/ Allison was cast partialy because she had a face that could be made up as young and bohemian and then later made to look hard and old, making it very hard to guess her actual age The writers apparently wanted Maura, Dominic and Joshua specifically for those roles, which I found to be very interesting.
