I can't say what I would have done in the moment. I would not initiate a physical confrontation, nor would I shrink from one. I would be torn between outrage on my own and the kids' behalf, wanting to show that racism is not tolerated (my kids are minorities) and the possibility of that a physical escalation would teach the wrong lesson/set the wrong example. Even if I thought it would get physical, I would be aware that he has kids too, and nobody needs to see their dad get his ass kicked, even if their dad is an asshole.

My best guess would be something like telling the man "you need to go now." Probably it would be less calm, more confrontational, and wordier than that. If it looked like it was about to get physical, I'd try to tell the nearest person to call the police before getting into it.
