I wish the schools would get out of the business of trying to adjudicate the sexual conduct of students. Most do nothing but end up sending out mixed messages: sex is great, drinking is fun, and sex and drinking are fine unless they aren't, and if you ever have any question as to whether things got out of control, don't hesitate to take it up with our Office of Student Shenanigens, and then we'll get to the bottom of it, unless we're incompetent to do so or our panel of nitwits decide it really wasn't a big deal after all. Better to simply have someone serve in a clearing-house role who can point a student who truly believes she or she has been assaulted to a responsible law enforcement officer who treats an incident that occurred on a college campus no differently than one alleged to have taken place anywhere else.
This. Schools should not be involved in investigating or adjudicating rape allegations. Schools do not have trained staff. Schools do not have clear systematic and fair rules for adjudication. Schools usually have many conflicts of interests in adjudicating allegations. All girls (and boys) should receive counseling in Health Ed and from their parents beginning in middle school about the sexual assault laws in their state. This should be repeated every year or two thru high school and college. Students should be explicitly taught about the wide range of sexual behavior from non-consensual grab-ass type assault to rape with a deadly weapon and everything in between that constitutes a criminal act. Girls and boys should also receive training about the idea of "consent" -- that only kids of a certain age can legally consent, that some other classes of people are legally incapable of consenting (e.g. drunk, drugged or mentally incapacitated persons), and that clear consent is a necessary pre-requisite to any kind of sexual activity. Girls and boys should be taught to report all sexual assaults to law enforcement. Period.
