Most of jewish law (oral torah) is contained in later works and commentaries. "torah" in the broader sense can include not only the talmud, but the entire corpus of jewish legal tradition stemming from the torah. I will do a quick search, but I imagine its derived from the biblical ban on idolatry (which christianity has been considered, at least since the time of Maimonides I think)[/quote]
