I think a big problem with conversations about faith between believers and non-believers, is the use of the bible as a source. Believers believe the bible is truth while atheists don't. We cannot have a discussion where one person is using a source that the other thinks is completely in left field. The believer thinks that by completely dismissing the bible, the atheist is being disrespectful. I don't know how to get past this first barrier of contention.
This is NOT true. Catholics, for example, are not biblical fundamentalists. I don't know one Catholic who believes the Book of Genesis, foe example, is literally true.
And yet, I've seen many Catholics on this board use the Bible as a basis for arguments, such as, (paraphrasing) I knew you before you were formed in the womb to oppose abortion, or to condemn homosexuality, both things which Jesus never addressed. Then when you point out the absurdity of the Old Testament, they disown the OT as if it's not a part of Catholicism. The picking and choosing of what to accept in the Bible is another serious logical flaw among believers.
