I like this theory.  That gives me hope that Bates actually got to look Green in the eyes and put the fear of God in him.

As for Mr. Blake, I like him more than Mr. Gillingham; he just seems more appealing and I also have this feeling Gillingham is after Mary for her fortune.  At least with Blake being from aristocracy himself, we know he's not in need of money and is interested in Mary regardless.[/quote]
