pp thanks for the lengthy response. I agree with one point that you make: private schools teach kids how to write well. Public schools have their talented writers too, but they seem to learn it from a home culture more than in school. WRT STEM, I think that the good public schools have the advantage, better resources and staff at the HS level. I had friends who went to private school then transferred into public (Whitman) and they could write better, they complained less, and they were for the most part better prepared when we had big projects and so on. They had no advantages in the sciences or math and were rarely in the top math groups. That said, you can teach a child to write well at home, or for that tuition, I could hire a summer tutor to spend three hours a week with my child tecahing writing. Maybe even a Holton teacher.
I just read thru the posts. Just because you try to rationalize every reason why it isn't worth it and public is, doesn't mean others agree. I like smaller classrooms, girls only, various sports like crew and ice hockey that aren't offered in public, global education, all college prep, high community involvement, teacher communication, intense workload, early language classes, various day and overnight field trips, free healthy breakfast and lunch. You can rationalize anything but this is the environment I want my daughter learning in. Some people (actually a lot) pay for these things. It doesn't mean public is bad. There are certain schools out there that fit certain kids. I just pay for my daughter's education and skimp elsewhere. No designer things, used cars, only one vacation a year, no refinancing or other sect/loans. THIS is what I want to spend my money on. It doesn't make me any better than anyone else. It is just my choice and we are happy. So yes OP, for us it is very much worth it.
Um, I have a child in private school, and one in public school.
