I love Uber, will rarely use cabs nowadays unless I'm in a situation where there are a ton of cabs and it is more convenient. Every single Uber driver I've had (probably 20-30) has been very courteous. They never complain about your destination...i.e. DC cabbies hate traveling into VA and VA cabbies hate driving into DC. Try getting a DC cab to take you into Bethesda on a weekend night...if they even take you, they will guilt trip you the whole way. Gratuity is included and the rate is charged to you credit card, so there is no surrounding pressure for a tip, need for cash, etc. The best aspect is you can literally track where your car is on the App. I used it to get Van Ness UDC to Rosslyn twice this week because of the Redline shut down. $22 the first time and $26 the second time because it was a high demand time so the fare was 1.5 the normal rate (which they blatantly inform you of before submitting your car request). Re: safety...interestingly enough I asked my driver (who had driven a cab in PG county for 5 years, before recently swtiching to Uber) his favorite part about working with Uber. Aside from the higher pay, he said safety. Since every transacation is set up through the App, both the rider and the driver have a record of their passenger (with a name and picture for driver). So, if you had a sketchy driver you could trace it much more easily than the lady who said she compares the license in the back of the car to the driver. To me, I'll take the extra cost for the convenience (tracking your actual car, not relying on a dispatcher), and lower stress (not worrying about cash, having to deal with cab drivers who refuse or don't want to take you places). I find it comical that cab unions are so up in arms about Uber, yet refuse to look in the mirror and ask themselves why people are choosing the service. In this case (and in most cases), increased competition has raised the bar and provided more (and better) options for the consumer.
