Honest question -- Is GP a glorified Gonzaga or is it really I top independent school in the same league as STA, Sidwell and Landon.
It's more complicated than that. GP and Gonzaga are similar and increasingly compete for some of the same students. But Gonzaga is twice the size of GP, is much more diverse and offers an urban setting/experience. Gonzaga location offers a challenge that GP's does not. But Gonzaga students learn things about city life that few other schools can offer. Both schools do a very good job with their top students. Landon, STA and Sidwell all have different target markets and different personalities. People who send their boys to GP or Gonzaga rarely consider these other Independnets.
Not true at least for probably most native Washingtonians that attended DC private school themselves. We consider all of the Independents and make our choice based on what we think is the best fit for our DC.
Sorry but it is true. If you are considering Sidwell, the chances you are also looking at GP or Gonzaga is minuscule. You can't possibly consider every independent. If you are looking for all boys and non religious, there are 2 choices in the DC area, St Albans and Landon. Religious boys, GP, Gonzaaga, St Anselms, and the Heights. If you want a religious experience, why would you even look at Landon, Sidwell or st Albans? It makes no sense.
Maybe for you. I am only considering Gonzaga and STA. Don't want Sidwell because it is coed. Not very impressed with the academics at the others except St. Anselms. Not considering St. Anselms based on the experiences of several boys I know that matriculated there recently. And yes I have considered almost all of them in MD and DC. Only considered the Congressional School and Potomoc School in VA. BTW - STA is Episcopal and Sidwell is Quaker. All of my friends and relatives here have or are doing the same.
I don't know how many friends and relatives you are talking about, but right now Gonzaga is a pretty "hot" school. I would suspect that the GZA Admissions people are going to favor graduates of the Catholic grade schools. Admitting non-Catholics will raise a lot of hackles if there are a lot of Catholic school kids who didn't make the cut.
