I was introduced to alcohol at the table in Europe at a family dinner - no lectures, just enjoying a fine wine with a pot roast.  I also was offered sherry with appetizers at friend's houses in France.  There was no drama there either and I didnt like the taste of it.  I was 15 both times.  And now as an adult, I have a drink now and then but I have never understood the idea of drinking alcohol to get drunk.  It wasnt something I did in college the way kids in the US do.
I am not saying to break out the Whiskey for the kids but demonizing it might not be the right way to go here.  Same thing for cigarettes.  
I have 3 kids and we live in a rowhouse in NW and sometimes we go out front and there is something I am not so fond of going on with music and aggressive lyrics coming  from a car, or kids using foul language etc....we just move it along to avoid or we go play in the back.  You dont own the world.  But you do own your feet:)[/quote]
