Wow, I'm the first PP who mentioned risks (and I have not been back to this page since my reply to the usernamed PP). I get that PPs here are making a distinction between what they fully admit is their own need for constant reassurance when there's no indication of a problem (is there a heartbeat? Okay, whew) and relying on that later in pregnancy for reassurance if something otherwise seems off or they feel less movement, etc. But to PPs who suggest that their anxiety skyrockets if they don't have this tool, I think the bigger issue is that using this doppler is temporarily solving one solution of an anxiety disorder that some of the PPs don't realize they have. Look, pregnancy is a seriously scary time. It's filled with risk and sometimes, heartbreak. More often than not, it's not. It's this exact overage of info (we are constantly bombarded by miscarriage stats, have books that might have be titled "what is definitely going to go wrong, eventually, when you are expecting" and other stuff to drive us crazy. Add in an IVF scenario where very little is left to chance and we emerge wanting to scrutinize and second guess and panic over every aspect of pregnancy. The truth is, with a doppler, sometimes you'll get a heartbeat and sometimes you won't. If you don't know how to use it, you'll aim that thing all around in there, and you are HEATING UP THE CELLS OF YOUR BABY. Sorry for the all caps, but seriously, people think this is just NBD? There is evidence out there against overuse of ultrasound technology. if you read the links I supplied, not from some crunchy website but from a OB GYN best practices site, along with peer reviewed cites and studies, doppler is stronger than ultrasound imaging. Stronger. These are not harmless devices or medically necessary. If you are using them multiple times per day that's a risk. You need to know that. Don't glaze over it and think they wouldn't sell them if they weren't safe. Many doctors have spoken out about this and all of the official use is clear. It's advised that you do not use home dopplers, get "novelty" ultrasounds, etc. Don't expose baby to any more dopplers than necessary. I just can't believe how many people are just like yeah, I know it's a risk, but whatevs...deal baby because mommy is anxious.
