Why is the proficient rate so low for everybody?
You should read the Banner article, it is really good and addresses how Maryland became 38th in the nation in math when it used to be one of the top states
I originally didn't click on the link because assumed things from the Banner was behind a paywall or I had to register to be able to read it. But was able to read the article. But hmm. Interesting. The article says students started struggling in the Algebra I state assessment when they implemented Common Core. But another poster before how schools like Pyle had a high proficiency rate before the pandemic. And looking at the 2019 rates, copy and pasted below, it shows Pyle with 92 percent. So even with the more difficult Common Core, the proficiency rates were higher then the 2025 MCAP rates (2025 rates were provided in a previous post). ie: Pyle MS 2019: 92 2025: 80.5 Westland MS 2019: 92 2025: 57.3 Julius West MS 2019: 57 2025: 64.4 (improvement) Baker MS 2019: 39.7 2025: 34.6 Argyle MS 2019: 14.3 2025: 8.4 So my point is even though proficiency rates might've dropped with the implementation of Common Core around 2015, there is still a significant drop in some schools from prepandemic numbers to now. Julius West being an exception. Whether or not this is due to loss of learning due to the pandemic, the MCAP being a harder test/curriculum not aligned with the test, etc is kind of hard to say. But if Algebra I proficiency rates declined before the implementation of the Common Core to after, it has apparently been continuing to decline since. And before the pandemic, some schools had pretty high proficiency rates. So don't think the decline is just due to the implementation of Common Core. 2019 Algebra I proficiency rates: LSS Name--School Number--School Name--Assessment--Tested Count--Proficient Pct Prince George's--1416--Dora Kennedy French Immersion--Algebra 1--25-->= 95.0 Montgomery--0755--Takoma Park Middle--Algebra 1--296--92.2 Montgomery--0428--Thomas W. Note the data on Maryland becoming 38th in the nation is from the NAEP
