Same (also PV/summer league official), + 1. Every once in a blue moon — very rarely!! — I have been on deck when an official flat out got it wrong, would not back down, and video evidence would have been useful. This happened in a summer league Divisionals several years back when one of the top swimmers swam a clean race, but the referee marked the wrong swimmer as false starting. Video evidence showed the referee got the wrong lane, but the summer league (leaving this vague on purpose) said it was too late. I was on deck and it was clear the referee got the wrong lane, but nothing was done. The swimmer probably would have won All Stars. It’s summer league, though. So really, it’s not a huge deal. That same swimmer will likely still be successful in years to come.
False starts require dual confirmation from both the Referee and Starter. They both would have to get it wrong.
That's true, but it sounds like whoever filled out the DQ slip put the wrong lane. This happened at metros several years ago and the wrong relay was DQ'd. Clear video evidence disputed it, yet the DQ stood. That's just how swimming works except at the highest levels, so certainly OP shouldn't use video evidence to dispute a time at time trials
If true, the coaches must have botched the protest procedure. In such a case, video evidence would not be needed if the coach were competent. Assuming the ref is not totally corrupt. Though at metros I guess they don't have to answer to anyone and may (or may not) lack a robust protest policy. Also a relay at metros if not a top 5 is unlikely to be important to anyone. Also, no meet has more room for improvement than metros. The venue is way too small and remote. The weather is invariably the most frigid and windy and awful day of winter. The internet signal sucks in and near the facility. It really has almost no redeeming qualities and I say this after 4 years of driving my kid to that remote outpost.
