Ward 1 has always had fairly poor representation. Raj can’t really do that much damage and she’ll be amusing.
"Amusing"? I do not want a councilmember who is "amusing". I want a council member who will actually care about making the splash park at Columbia Heights plaza somewhere parents can once again take their kids, instead of a waystand for the inebriated. I want a council member who advocates for having the laws enforced against the illegal ATVers who make life hellish for the residents of buildings on U Street instead of just bleating that we can't interfere with "culture" and people need to soundproof their apartments (just how exactly . . . . ?). I want a council member who cares about and listens to small businesses in the Ward instead of just blindly agreeing with whatever craziness the GGW people dream up. I want a councilmember who understands that failing to enforce laws against shoplifters and lifting all prohibitions against street vending has resulted in (a) businesses in Ward 1 either closing due to rampant theft or else keeping every since item under lock and key; and (b) all those random tables of people selling shoplifted goods littering the street. I want a councilmember who is willing to protect tenants in apartment buildings from being assaulted by fellow tenants by agreeing to expedited eviction processes for the violent---something that JLG voted against. I want a councilmember who understands that endorsing feel-good measures like rent freezes will actually have a net negative effect on housing affordability as investors and builders shun the District. I voted for Brianne because Jim Graham was corrupt and vengeful. I regretted that vote ever since because while Graham WAS those things, he also was a much better advocate for quality of life issues in the Ward.
