My townhouse in FCC has a walk score of 93 (probably should be higher) but it's now over $1,000,000 for a townhouse. I, personally think it's worth it. Smallest class sizes in the area, most funding, and when I call the high school only occasionally they know who I am and are very helpful solving issues. FCC Arlington Fairfax County Montgomery County (a total mess, high taxes)
I love MoCo, and my kids did very well at BCC (all attended top 25 schools), so I have no clue what is referenced by "total mess." But as to taxes, I have family in Arlington, and it turns out that Arlington is rapidly raising taxes because companies are no longer interested in locating there: Car tax: https://www.reddit.com/r/arlingtonva/comments/1t25i8v/updated_arlington_car_tax_rate_calculation_for/ Property tax: https://www.arlnow.com/2026/04/30/why-real-estate-taxes-are-going-up-in-arlington-but-going-down-in-fairfax/ https://www.arlnow.com/2026/04/23/split-county-board-approves-2-cent-tax-hike-as-part-of-1-7b-budget/
OP this isn’t accurate. PP is glossing over the county tax in MD that’s in addition to state + property taxes. People here with a vested interest in MD property values will tell you it’s the same as the VA car tax. It’s not.
I live in Arlington, and of course it's accurate that our taxes are going up. They're not at MD levels, but we shouldn't deny that Arlington has historically relied heavily on commercial property taxes, and that income source is on a downward trajectory with no signs of improving. Arlington has a serious spending problem, and so I think our taxes are just going to keep getting worse. Unless you're extremely wealthy (which OP probably isn't given the housing budget), the overall tax difference between MD and VA is not that meaningful once you factor in Arlington's car tax and higher property taxes.
