People here have a lot of opinions about red states, but zoning quirks make the Houston area incredibly affordable for such a huge city with a major international airport, great food and people moving there from all over the world for jobs in the aerospace and chemical industries. Not to mention an excellent, affordable state flagship university. It’s less quintessentially “Texan” than snootier, pricier Dallas. But you have to love humidity and driving!
I have mentioned this to my DH but ultimately the car centric culture is a no go for him. But yes, Houston is really underrated on the East Coast. People think it's a big, soulless parking lot. But it has amazing food and music, a large percentage of the population is highly educated, and manages to be both sophisticated and laid back. It's like Southern Seattle, but cheaper. Plus it's warm year round and there are nice beaches nearby. I'm a tennis player and would love to move somewhere I could play outside all year, and DH loves the beach. But yes, you will drive absolutely everywhere and it the humidity makes DC feel truly Northern. Tradeoffs.
