The point of athletic competition is to work your hardest because you want to win. Gold medalists are the ones that are most likely to get commercial deals and big payouts. The silver and bronze medalists get a nice trophy but it probably serves more as a reminder of not winning. Most people follow the gold medal count. The only time the US cares about the total medal count is during the winter Olympics because we suck at so many winter Olympic sports. Colleges don't care about the PSAT scores, they care about the SATs. NMSF are sought after because they are expected to have great grades and SATs. I would bet that 95% of the people on this board had no clue kids were commended until there was the ridiculous scandal over commended kids not being told they were commended.[/quote]
