Is this a real perception? Is it recent? I went to Georgetown in the early 90s and hated how conservative it was. Yes, students and faculty care about others (is that woke?) but they also sent a huge contingent of students to the March for Life and LGBTQ students felt like fish out of water. But then, I guess a lot can change in 30 years.
I think it has changed quite a bit since then. Georgetown was the first Catholic university in the country to establish an LGBTQ+ center (in 2008). Hoyas for Choice is always tabling in Red Square. The Center for Social Justice is extremely active. As a (non-Catholic, non-Christian, left/progressive) employee, I find it a very comfortable place to work. One thing it is not is a super-activist place. I think students who are drawn to Georgetown are more “work within the system” types.
Even ND had GALA-ND/SMC over 30 years ago, though it was club, though PRISM/ND didn't open until 2012.
