Useful post. Hopefully some people will find opportunities they didn't think about. Some of the sectors such as education can be very low pay and the barriers to entry (certification etc) high. While not every state is not West Virginia, there aren't many states that pay teachers the way NY does though for example.
The barrier of entry is often a college degree and willingness to complete a certification program. Some districts are really desperate. I’m a career changer and I now mentor others. The biggest issue (to me) is the revolving door. We can always find people willing to try teaching, but we can’t find people willing to stay. People exiting often cite working conditions as their reason for leaving (lack of work/life balance, unsustainable responsibilities). They don’t mention pay often. But “education” does answer the question “where are the jobs?”
Unless truly desperate- avoid education. Spouse is at 2 year mark. About a dollar an hour with lesson plans, certification and simply horrendous working conditions: dickish vice principals (largely dumb and male) or distant VPs (largely female); lawsuit-happy parents and a generation addicted to all-mighty phones. Parents with so much cognitive dissonance when confronted about Larlo’s/Larla’s cheating and/or juvenile behavior it’s not even comedic. Take decade off the number they say they are: 17 act like 7 year olds. if Kahnmann was still active he’d have field days about this lost generation. I pray I will be able to retire my small biz before hiring a single alpha member. Steve Jobs was right to keep his devices from his own progeny 15 years ago. What’s the opposite of RIP? - whatever it is that’s for him!) Teaching is for absolute birds. Work at Costco before I’d do it myself.
