As someone married into a family with hidden mental illness and subsequent violence that they still deny, this story is crazy and also so familiar. It is astonishing to see how people can both be aware of a truth about a member of their nuclear family and also in total denial. I assume that people like this never have to develop cognitive dissonance but instead it’s just a standard state of living that they’re raised in from infancy/toddlerhood so their brains become wired to assume it as normal.
+1 And way too many people, including professionals, emphasize that few mentally ill individuals commit crimes. Well, that fact doesn't mean that every single day you won't worry that your family member will be one of that group. Bipolar and schizophrenic individuals can get very violent, and adults with autism can respond in a very aggressive way as well.
