JMU and Tulane is the perfect example of DEI in the College Football Playoff (CFP).
Huh? DEI is quite the bogeyman for you people. Anything you don’t like, you just blame on DEI.
People really think JMU and Tulane are better than Texas, Vandy, BYU, and ND? That’s like comparing the NBA to the G league. If that’s not DEI in action, I’m not sure what is.
There are two main reasons why there is at least one group of 5 champion in the CFP. First, there was a concern that a rule giving automatic invitations to only the power conference champions might violate antitrust laws, since the CFP is dominated by the Power 4 (actually by the SEC and Big Ten). Thus, currently it gives automatic invitations to the 5 highest ranked conference champions, so that theoretically any FBS conference champ could get in if ranked high enough. Second, and perhaps more importantly, if the CFP is going to be truly a national championship it needs to have a mechanism where the group of 5 teams at least have a chance of participating, albeit a small one. Finally, Tulane beat USC in the Cotton Bowl in 2022 and was ranked No.9 in the country that year.
