Gen X: I’m on DCUM, Facebook, LinkedIn and instagram. I followed two people on TikTok then I know. My Gen Z family are on Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Snapchat. They don’t look at Facebook. I understand some people can’t look at this stuff without getting jealous, or obsessed or influenced. Just like alcohol, it’s not for everybody. It’s not going away and it’s gonna be part of the workplace so they better learn social media and AI.
Social media isn't like alcohol, it's like crack. It is not possible to consume TikTok and similar apps without having negative impacts. These apps train your brain to need the constant stimulation of of bite-size entertainment, and also use algorithms to ensure people are only exposed to content they will like/be susceptible to. Also, the apps are free. Why? The same reason drug dealers will sometimes offer a taste for free. Everyone will pay later, don't worry. You may think you are not susceptible to the negative sides of social media, but likely you are and are simply unaware. People who acknowledge the negative impacts of social media tend to be more critical and self aware, and therefore better able to identify social media as the root of issues. You probably have negative mental health and relationship effects from your social media use, but just don't realize it.
