I found half my kid's homework sheets in her room this summer. Guess what? She's still in 6th grade. Sit with him, do two hours max (triage the most important), and then email the teacher that you sat with him and list out what he was not able to finish. Do it for a week and then ask to meet if the situation has not self corrected. I get the sense that you are not a native born American. Unfortunately, I have found that you have to advocate for your kids more than you expect at school.
I would do 30 minutes max but I would also check with the teacher that what the kid is bringing home is actual homework and not schoolwork. The only work my kid had as homework on the computer in ES was Lexia and ST Math. The description of the work sounds like incomplete school work. That is a different issue to address.
